There are several cottage resorts around but few are as luxurious—and none are as unusual—as northwest Connecticut’s Winvian Cottages. Really “cottage” is a bit of a misnomer here, suggesting accommodations more simple than the Winvian’s abodes, each of which designed by a different architect and possessing its own flair. The Library Cottage is centered around double-story wrap-around book shelves. The Treehouse Cottage is a two-story wonder built amongst the leaves and branches 30 feet above the ground. Perhaps the most unusual option is the Helicopter Cottage, which is large enough to contain the whole of a Sea King Pelican helicopter. Though back when the U.S. Coast Guard was flying it we suspect this ‘copter didn’t contain the minibar, sofa and flat screen TV it has today

 | Beaver Lodge This cabin is reminiscent of a beaver’s den! The interior features exquisite hand-crafted woodwork and intricate stone masonry. The dual-sided fireplace warms the living room and sleeping area. The bathroom offers a unique waterfall tub, pebbled floors and stone steam shower. From the living area, an iron spiral staircase leads to a lofted sitting area with views of the pond and woods.
| | | | | Artist Cottage Based on a 1920s artist’s bungalow, this cottage has many artistic details including a gingerbread exterior, etched and stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings and custom art tile. The king-size bed boasts a barrel vaulted wooden canopy. The living room has an adjoining artist’s studio complete with easel and canvas on which guests can test their artistic talents. | | | | | Charter Oak Cottage This spacious retreat is situated in the Farmyard, where three clustered cottages make it an ideal stay for couples traveling together. Inside the Charter Oak Cottage is an imposing oak tree reminiscent of the tree that hid Connecticut’s charter during the revolutionary period. Entertain your friends in the “tavern” or stroll up the silo stairs to the silo porch and enjoy coffee or an evening drink overlooking the orchard and meadow. | | | | | Camping Cottage Enjoy the camping experience Winvian style. This cottage is nestled in Winvian’s wood line and one can truly be with nature at its best. The floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the cottage afford you the experience of the outdoors while under the protection of luxury. Should you fancy a roasted marshmallow, toast away at the porch’s outdoor fireplace. This cottage is handicap accessible. | | | | | CT Yankee Cottage Based on Mark Twain’s book Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, this medieval cottage is rich with warm colors, a herringbone fireplace, exposed beams and a bed fit for King Arthur. The key feature is the bathroom with imposing granite slabs reminiscent of Stonehenge. The steam shower also boasts twin ceiling mounted rain shower heads with individual controls. | | | | | Golf Cottage With the intention of bringing St. Andrews to Winvian, this cottage is designed for golf enthusiasts to chip and putt their way over undulating floors to the putting green outside. This cabin is located on the north side of the Winvian grounds and overlooks the meadow to the south. | | | | | Greenhouse Cottage This glass house is a treasure to behold. High ceilings and abundant sunlight grace the living area, while the private sleeping area affords a cozy respite. Unusual horticultural specimens complete the nature of this experience. | | | | | Helicopter Cottage A 1968 fully restored Sikorsky HH37 Sea King Pelican helicopter dominates this cottage. The helicopter’s interior houses the bar and entertainment center. Imagine you have landed and your hanger site is of contemporary décor and absolute luxury. | | | | | Industry Cottage In tribute to Connecticut’s steel industry, this cottage is a modern take on the mills and forges of Old New England. Its sleek design and simple lines are a modern take on local history. A special feature in this cottage is a dual-sided fireplace, opening onto the tub area on one side and yet pleasing to guests in the living area on the other. | | | | | Library Cottage Inspired by the libraries of yesteryear, this cottage is dominated by books on double-story shelves. A ladder accesses a wrap-around second level balcony above a glorious river stone fireplace in front of which one can curl up and read. An imposing skylight brightens the cottage by day and allows for stargazing at night. | | | | | Maritime Cottage This cottage is a collage of traditional forms and materials that reflect on the paradoxical concept of lighthouse imagery in the forest. While situated in the northern woods of Winvian, this nautical inspiration will transport you to the Connecticut shoreline. Imagine a night in a lighthouse without the worries of inclement weather. | | | | | Log Cabin Tucked away in the corner of the woods is our log cabin. Imagine the quintessential log cabin experience and you will find it at Winvian. Surrounded by White Memorial’s preserve, this cabin would inspire the naturalist. | | | | Go to www.Winvian .com to view music room
| Music Cottage Of very modern design, this cottage is a celebration of all things musical. Strong colors and bold design are the forum found in Music. Come “play” the cottage inside and out. | | | | | Secret Society Cottage On the Winvian grounds sits Secret Society. Very mystical in appearance, this cottage seems dark and forbidding, and yet you will be surprised by the light. Our lips are sealed, but yours won’t be. | | | | | Stable Cottage At the end of Meadow Lane you will find Stable Cottage. Built into the landscape, this multi-level cottage gives new meaning to an equestrian’s lifestyle. The lofted entry overlooks the sleeping area with views into the western forest, while a sunken tub on the ground level transcends you into nature. | | | | | Stone Cottage Built entirely of Connecticut boulders, this rock pile is truly a sight to behold. Its undulating slate roof and eyebrow picture windows enhance this masterful creation. The setting of the Stone Cottage is such that one would imagine it was always there, anchoring the edge of Winvian’s meadow to the north. The half-moon screened-in porch provides yet another hideaway. | | | | | The Treehouse Ten meters off the ground, suspended amongst the trees, this commanding two-story cottage features an open plan bedroom and bathroom on one level, complete with threeway fireplace. One story higher, a large living area with a second fireplace can be found. This cottage is not for the feint of heart. Sway with the breeze and touch the leaves. | | | | | Woodland Cottage Life is a shade better amongst the trees. This cottage blurs the lines between outdoor and indoor living. Architectural features include a natural stone waterfall, interior wood siding and sinks crafted from tree trunks. A sunken tub overlooks the woodland landscape. | | | | | The Hadley Suite Located on the second floor of the historic Seth Bird House, this suite has been restored to its original glory. It’s three rooms feature 20-inch chestnut floor boards and are furnished with many of the family’s original possessions. Included in this suite is a living room, studio library and a master bedroom, complete with a traditional four-poster bed. The master bath and bedroom overlook Vivian’s established perennial gardens to the south. | | | |

Today I found a pretty cool hotel. Its a little dark but its still beautifull
About Crazy Bear - Beaconsfield Luxury design at its most dramatic Uninhibited and uncompromised design – a masterpiece The oldest documented building in Beaconsfield has been magnificently restored over four years in a made-to-order, without restraint, makeover. Its re-design can only be described as awesome – dramatic architecture, luxurious materials, spectacular lighting and even an underground extension create an elaborate, luxurious property. The main bar is a work of art in its own right. From an Italian jade marble floor and gloss polished walnut & copper bar, to the two huge skylights where a row of six 1930s crystal chandeliers sit, you see top-to-toe luxury. Along one wall is a custom-made, seventeen meter black chesterfield, studded with Swarovski crystals. There are polished pewter tables and stools. Heavy crushed velvet curtains drape from antique hand carved oak panelling to complete the extreme décor. A grand white marble staircase with an elaborate ironwork vine sculpture and python banister leads to the private bar, The Crystal Room. This underground Aladdins cave has mirrored walls, ceiling and fibre optic lighting effects. Tastefully furnished with lots of pewter, seating is white embossed leather with a matching black leather floor. To complete the luxury of this property the small garden has an infinity swimming pool and jacuzzi - kept at steaming hot temperature throughout the year.

The Pavilion is a groovy 30 room hotel in central London targeted at a discerning, artistically minded clientele. Rooms are themed to project a funky and glamorous image. "Honky Tonky Afro" is a tribute to the 1970's while "Casablanca Nights" is a deco inspired Moorish fantasy. Located near Oxford Str and Hyde park, Harpers & Queen magazine described the Pavilion as "London's chicest little Hotel". According to the Evening Standard newspaper it is "London's hottest crash pad for style slaves in W2." The hotel is just a few minutes walk from Padington Station and is accessible direct from Heathrow Airport via the new fast train service and from Waterloo Station (home of Eurostar). Rooms are crammed with quirky eccentricities and benefit from having all the necessities of modern day living such as en suite facilities, direct dial telephones and satellite television. The Pavilion is popular amongst the fashion, media and music world. A diverse collection of bands, pop stars and actors have visited the hotel. | London Hotels Casablanca Nights This magical room takes its inspiration from the sun soaked lands of North Africa. A heady mix of rich colours, sumptuous fabrics and moody lighting, this room looks best at night, when the giant traditional Moroccan lantern casts intricate patterns across a ceiling twinkling with silver and gold stars and over twin Edwardian beds draped in mosquito nets. Solid deco furniture and lots of leopard print fabrics add an eclectic touch. | London Hotels Highland Fling He slipped back deeper into the soft cushions that adorned the heavy tartan drape on the bed. For a moment he tried to remember what clan it represented but the concentration was too much for him. It had been a hard day trudging through the sleet and snow and all those years south of the border had almost made him forget that bitter north wind. Half in sleep he began to look at his surroundings. His eyes fell upon the huge stag antlers hung high on the thick oak panelling that clad the room. He recalled how, as a young boy, he would go stalking the beasts for hours with his father through the glens. Finally, with one in the sights of his barrels, his father would not have the heart to shoot. With a sigh he would lower his shotgun and whip out a flask of single malt whiskey allowing the boy a wee dram. "A thing of beauty is not to be killed my boy" he would say as he wiped the perspiration from his brow. The slow indulations of the heavy tapestry that dominated the far wall brought him back to the present. On it were the images of Scots Kings and Prices. In his semi conscious state the tapestry's movements almost brought them to life. The snow flurries were now playing violently against the window. His eyelids were heavy with sleep but in the corner of the room he could just make out a small picture in a delicate frame. Could it be? He tried to focus on the scene depicted in the water colour. It was an image familiar to him. A view of loch. Was it? Yes it was. Loch Kilcardy at dawn. He had lost count of how many times he had gone salmon fishing there... Suddenly the telephone rang shaking him violently out of his sleep. "I'm sorry to trouble you sir, it's reception here. What time would you like breakfast?" He began to remember where he was, as he could faintly hear the sound of the No 36 Bus to Marble Arch slushing its way through the Snow. | | London Hotels Green With Envy A cosy room with 2 beds, Green With Envy is filled with beautiful and idiosyncratic objects. An Arts & Crafts style wardrobe is cleverly juxtaposed with faux tortoiseshell dressing table and old fashioned chintz headboard. Walls are painted a deep velvety green and windows are lavishly draped with yards of sumptuous dark green silk. The overall effect is one of cocooned opulence. | London Hotels Better Red Than Dead This is an intimate double bedded room decorated almost entirely in shades of red. A voluptuous symphony of claret, vermilion and burgundy is elegantly combined with antique French furniture, theatrical curtains and flamboyant bed hanging. The result is an enchanting and original room, peacefully located at the back of the building. | | London Hotels Honky Tonk Afro This room is a humorous interpretation of the decade of unbounded excess that was the 70's. Walls are a vibrant lime green, boldly trimmed with fluorescent pink feather boas. Curtains are sequinned in true disco style and tied back with furry dice! Heart shaped mirrored headboards are complemented by hippy glass beads in jewel colours draped around the bed. There is a disco ball (of course) and walls are adorned with pictures of icons from that era. This is a room that knows no restraint kitschy, over the top and totally groovy. | London Hotels Funky Zebra | | London Hotels Diamonds Are Forever | London Hotels Gold Finger

| | London Hotels White Days Soul Nights A light and frothy confection in shades of white and cream, "White Days, Soul Nights" is a peaceful attic room with a double bed and a deliciously airy feel. Restrained, painted antique French furniture is offset by white painted floor boards, whilst magnificent gilt and crystal wall sconces lend an opulent note. A window pelmet imaginatively fashioned from an antique wedding dress is the finishing touch. | London Hotels Indian Summer A real gem of a room, small but exquisite, "Indian Summer" has been boldly painted a vivid shade of pink, often quoted as "the navy blue of India". This in turn has been elaborately and painstakingly overpainted with gold swirls reminiscent of the art nouveau artist Gustav Klimt. A sub-Continental flavour is evoked by the use of heavy colonial furniture, a teak 4 poster bed and sumptuous brocade fabrics. Coloured glass and crystal lanterns complete the picture, giving the whole room an exotic jewel box feeling. | | London Hotels Enter The Dragon Very oriental bordello in style, this is a spacious, first floor balcony room with twin beds. The spirit of Eastern exoticism is captured in this exciting room by the extensive use of imagery and pattern - on walls, curtains, even ceiling - and by the carefully assembled collection of Chinese treasures: carved and gilded wooden masks compete for attention with antique wedding chests and intricate screens, while an English Victorian bamboo desk reminds us of the West's long standing fascination with the East. | London Hotels War & Peace Despite their bargain prices, the single rooms at the Pavilion have been designed with the same care and attention to detail as larger suites. War & Peace is just one example. Located at the front of the house, with leafy tree top view, this small but striking room has been decorated to resemble a campaign tent from the era of Napoleonic wars ( The Hotel was actually once the private residence Napoleon's private Doctor). Red and white striped walls and a tented ceiling from the basis of this fantasy. A 4-poster single bed upholstered in the red and gold braid of an officer's uniform continues the theme. Antique prints and military paraphernalia abound. Even the bedside lamp has been fashioned from the base of an old rifle. Classical with a hint of humour, this is one of the Hotel's most popular single rooms. | | London Hotels Monochrome Marilyn The smallest single room in the Hotel, tucked away at the very top of the house Monochrome Marilyn is a superb example of design within a tiny space. Black & silver has been daringly used as a colour scheme, austere but somehow elegant. Yet despite the restrained palette, the Hotel's trademark veracity has been successfully injected into this room through the use of Andy Warhol inspired images of Marilyn Monroe pasted all over the walls. Silver swags and satin curtains at the window add a further touch of Hollywood glamour. Though diminutive in size, this room is a hauntingly beautiful space, like the star herself. | London Hotels Secret Garden A profusely floral room decorated in extrovert style with bold and beautiful patterns on every surface, Secret Garden is an exciting 1st floor room with a balcony. The spacious bathroom is located just across the landing, but is for the private use of this room only. The bedroom meanwhile has been inspired by vintage British Cinema. Walls are papered in a traditional floral design from Colfax and Fowler, an established bastion of English Country style. Solid oak furniture and heavy tapestry curtains further enhance the old fashioned ambience, whilst any hint of fustiness is dispelled by a painted and gilded four poster bed hung with silk and glass beading and unexpectedly exotic flourish in an otherwise sombre environment. | | London Hotels Silver Salon Hidden away in the basement of the Hotel an unassuming panelled door opens to reveal a glittering room of opulence and magnificence. No expense has been spared to create this beautiful formal sitting room of impressive proportions. Walls have been painstakingly decorated with silver leaf to give the impression of a hall of mirrors, set against a background of deep cobalt blue. A rare Anglo-Indian carved table divides the room into 2 contrasting halves, one sophisticated and masculine with damask upholstery and rich Turkish textiles, the other more feminine with delicate gilded French chairs and gilt console tables. Sumptuous silk curtains are draped elegantly beneath lavish organza pelmets, adding a dramatic touch as they shimmer seductively from the light of Italian chandeliers and old church candlesticks. A tromp l'oeil painted ceiling of clouded sky is the triumphant conclusion to an amazing space that has been extensively used as a location for films, music videos and photographic shoots by almost every glossy magazine imaginable. | London Hotels Cosmic Girl R 'n' B / Garage Singer "Craig David" gets down with female friend in the "Cosmic Girl" room. | | London Hotels Metallica
